Name:  ALBONE, Ernest     b: 4/12/1883 Biggleswade   d:1955
Address: 12 High Street, St Neots. The Studio, St Neots.
Working Dates: c. 1921-40
Subjects, styles, advertising, other relevant information: In 1901 Ernest was living at Church Street Biggleswade with his widowed mother. The census return shows that his mother was a laundress, but no occupation of shown for Ernest. The 1911 Census shows an Ernest Albone b. c.1884, a photographer and picture framer, as a visitor at an address in Shortmead St Biggleswade. In July 1918 Ernest served in the Royal Air Force. In the 1921 Census Ernest is recorded as a photographer and picture framer working on his own account from home in High Street St Neots. Employees of Ernest, noted in the 1921 Census were: BROWN, Catherine M and
PAGE, George Henry. In the 1939 Register Ernest d.o.b. 4/12/1883 was listed as a photographer at 12 High Street, St Neots, where he was living with his wife Hilda E Albone b: 25/4/1883. The CALM catalogue of the Cambridgeshire Archives shows photographs by Albone dating from 1918 and 1938. Some of his work survives in the Norris Museum, St Ives. PH/EATON/5-8, are a number of mounted prints of Cross Hall Lodge, dry stamped on the reverse “E Albone The Studio, St Neots”. PH/EYNES/1 a-d, is a series of photographs of a cross in the churchyard of St Mary’s Church, Eynesbury. One of these images, mounted on card, is dry stamped “F.Phillips and E.Albone, The Studio, St Neots". The Church yard cross was by S.Inskip Ladds ARIBB Mkt Place Huntingdon. This suggests that Ernest Albone and Fred Phillips were at some stage in a partnership - see entry for James Phillips below. Albone used a hand embossing press to add his details to postcard sized prints - the text reading "E.Albone The Studio St Neots" - see below example portrait of a teenage girl from the author's collection, below which is an enhanced detail of the embossing from the lower rh corner of the photograph.

ALLEN, Terry - see PHOTOSPHERE

Name: AMBROSE, Owen Seaber  b. 1883  d.1967
Address: Stuntney
Working Dates: c.1900
Subjects, styles, advertising, other relevant information: The son of Cole Ambrose, a farmer, Owen lived at The New Hall Stuntney, Cambs. He is described in the 1911 and 1921 census returns as a farmer. The Cambridgeshire Collection holds a number of Owen's photographs of Stuntney and Prickwillow, including an old photo album with family photographs. Some of his earlier images appear very amateur, but it seems that he quickly improved and there are many high quality images surviving. In the Cambridgeshire Collection are two of his images which appear in alternative versions as post cards, so Owen may have done more than purely amateur work. The postcard below of Prickwillow Vicarage, postally used in 1918, is believed to be from one of his images, there being other photographs of this scene and of snow scenes in Prickwillow by Ambrose in the Cambridgeshire Collection. There is however nothing printed on the card to show either the publisher or the photographer.

Cambridgeshire Collection - the duplicate postcard items are: Y.Pri.J9.10347, Prickwillow Vicarage and Y.Pri.J9.10357 Prickwillow Church. Details of the Cole Ambrose dynasty and their impact on agriculture and the local economy can be found here: www.stuntneyvillage.org.uk/coleambrose.htm.

The reverse is printed as a divided back postcard with no details of the photographer or publisher. Next is a cameo photograph of two children sitting on a shire horse. The photograph measures 3.9 x 2.7 inches, on a green / grey mount 4.3 x 3.3 inches on which is printed "D.Andrew Elsworth Cambs". The reverse of the mount is blank.
