Old Photographs - Cambridgeshire Photographers - Supplementary List of Cambridgeshire Photographers.

The main A - Z listing on this site contains details of those photographers who operated in what is now Cambridgeshire, whose work may be encountered by family and local historians. In the main these are photographers who wholly or partly made their living from photography, and survivals of their work turn up in family collections, antique shops, boot sales etc. The aim of this site is to provide as much information as possible about those photographers, including samples of work, to help the historian to date their findings.

But there were many other photographers, mainly amateurs, who took excellent photographs in Cambridgeshire and whose work you may encounter in local studies libraries, record offices and museums, rather than on the open market. This supplementary list details some of these other photographers.

Many of these names have been taken from a handlist of Cambridgeshire Photographers prepared by Mike Petty in 1992, which in turn draws heavily upon the photographic records of the Cambridge Antiquarian Society, held by the Cambridgeshire Collection. This list is a work in progress and it is anticipated that over time many other names will be added.

Another list, with around 1000 names of those connected with the Cambridge and District Photographic Society from 1902 to 1939, can be found on the site here.

ROSSITER, James 23 Green Street and 3 Rose Crescent, works at Camden Court Cambridge. Rossiter's name will turn up on some old photos because he was a printseller, gilder, picture cleaner and frame maker. No photographer's name is recorded, but on the rear is a James Rossiter label. Frame size 7.5 x 5.5 inches, image 4 x 3 inches, (author's collection).
